Abbeville, South Carolina, is one of the oldest and most storied towns in the Upstate, with roots stretching back to the mid-18th century. The area was originally inhabited by Cherokee people, who lived along the fertile Piedmont hills and valleys that would later attract European settlers. Around the 1750s, French Huguenots fleeing persecution settled in this part of what was then known as Ninety-Six District. They named the settlement "Abbeville" after a town in northern France, a reflection of the settlers' origins and a testament to their enduring influence. Officially established in 1764, Abbeville grew around the courthouse and became the county seat when Abbeville County was formed in 1785.

Throughout the 19th century, Abbeville developed into a thriving agricultural community, its economy largely driven by cotton. By the 1850s, Abbeville had several cotton gins, mills, and trading posts. The arrival of the Greenville & Columbia Railroad further enhanced its prosperity, allowing local farmers to ship their crops to distant markets. During the Civil War, Abbeville earned a place in history as the "Birthplace and Deathbed of the Confederacy," because Jefferson Davis convened the final Confederate council of war here in 1865.

As the 20th century unfolded, Abbeville saw gradual modernization. The expansion of highways, including U.S. 72 and 221, connected it more directly to larger markets in Greenwood and Anderson. The once-dominant cotton industry waned, but textile manufacturing and small-scale industry filled the gap. The historic downtown square, anchored by the 1908 Abbeville Opera House, became the cultural centerpiece of the community. The opera house remains a rare gem of early 20th-century Southern architecture, hosting plays and concerts that draw visitors from across the region.
