Airee is a small unincorporated locale in Chester County, South Carolina, that emerged amid the rolling Piedmont terrain of the upper South. The land was originally home to Indigenous groups such as the Catawba and possibly Cherokee, who used the region's woodland, creek valleys and river corridors for seasonal hunting and trade long before European arrival. With the settlement of the area in the mid-18th century by Scots-Irish, German and English immigrant families, homes, farms and community institutions began to appear along streams and rural tracks thrown north from the Lowcountry into the Piedmont. Airee was one of the many small settlements or crossroads communities that supported local agricultural life, church activity and rural schooling.

Agriculture was the bedrock of Airee's early economy: cotton and corn fields stretched across the region, supplemented by livestock and small timber operations. Community life centered around family farms, Baptist and Methodist churches, and one-room schoolhouses that anchored local social and educational activity. As Chester County's roads improved and the railroad lines reached the county in the mid-19th century, places like Airee gained modest access to broader markets, though they retained much of their rural isolation. Infrastructure evolved through the 20th century: paved county roads, telephone service, electricity and automobile-oriented commuting transformed the character of Airee's community. Homes built during this period reflect modest rural prosperity, while older farmsteads continue to dot the countryside. While no large town emerged in Airee, the surrounding region benefitted from proximity to richer manufacturing centers in Chester County and improved road links to urban areas. Community institutions such as churches, volunteer fire services, and local social clubs helped maintain the area's identity even as nearby towns grew.

Today, Airee offers the characteristics of quiet, rural living within reach of regional hubs. Its spacious properties, woodland views, and slower pace make it appealing for those seeking a country-in-town-reach lifestyle.
