Albemarle, the county seat of Stanly County, was established in 1841 shortly after the county's formation from parts of Montgomery County. The area's history, however, stretches back much further, with Native American tribes of the Pee Dee and Catawba nations once occupying the fertile Uwharrie River Valley. Early settlers, largely of German and Scotch-Irish descent, were drawn to the region's natural resources, especially the rich farmland and abundance of water sources. The town was named in honor of George Monck, Duke of Albemarle, a British nobleman who played a role in the colonization of the Carolinas.

Throughout the 19th century, Albemarle's economy revolved around agriculture and the emerging textile industry. Cotton became the principal cash crop, and as railroads expanded through Stanly County, Albemarle emerged as a regional hub for manufacturing and trade. The establishment of textile mills, such as Wiscassett Mills and Efird Manufacturing, brought economic growth and a surge in population. Mill villages formed around these factories, fostering tight-knit communities that shaped the town's identity for decades.

The arrival of the Norfolk Southern Railway in the late 1800s linked Albemarle to Charlotte and Raleigh, further enhancing commerce and accessibility. Infrastructure improvements followed, including the development of downtown Albemarle, which became the center of local government and business. Over time, new highways like U.S. 52 and N.C. 24/27 connected Albemarle to the broader Piedmont region, supporting retail and residential expansion.

Cultural and educational institutions have played a defining role in Albemarle's community life. Pfeiffer University, located nearby in Misenheimer, and Stanly Community College have contributed to local education and workforce development. The city has also maintained a strong appreciation for its history through preservation efforts at sites such as the Stanly County Museum and the Historic Snuggs House.

Modern Albemarle offers the charm of a traditional Southern town with the conveniences of a growing city. Its proximity to Charlotte, scenic access to Morrow Mountain State Park, and revitalized downtown make it an attractive place for families and businesses alike.
