Anderson, South Carolina, known as "The Electric City," has a rich and dynamic history that reflects both the agricultural roots and the industrial ingenuity of the South Carolina Upstate. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Nation, who lived along the region's creeks and foothills. Improved transportation—especially the construction of U.S. Highway 76 and later Interstate 85—connected Anderson with major metropolitan areas such as Greenville, Spartanburg, and Atlanta. The city developed a diverse manufacturing base that extended beyond textiles to include automotive parts, technology, and advanced materials. Public institutions flourished as well, with Anderson University, established in 1911, serving as a cornerstone of education and community development. The Anderson County Fair and annual community events helped foster civic pride and preserve the town's agricultural heritage.
