Ash is a rural community in northwestern Brunswick County, part of southeastern North Carolina's Coastal Plain. Long before permanent European settlement, the broader Cape Fear region was home to Indigenous peoples whose lives were closely connected to the rivers, wetlands, forests, and coastal resources of the area. European settlement expanded through southeastern North Carolina during the colonial period, with agriculture and timber becoming important to the regional economy. Brunswick County was established in 1764 from portions of New Hanover and Bladen counties and was named for the British royal House of Brunswick. Communities such as Ash developed gradually rather than around a dense urban center, with families establishing farms, churches, schools, and small crossroads settlements across the county's interior.

Agriculture and forestry shaped Ash and the surrounding countryside for generations. Transportation improvements gradually reduced Ash's isolation from the rest of Brunswick County. Early residents depended on local roads and waterways to reach markets and neighboring settlements, but twentieth-century highway construction provided stronger connections to Shallotte, Wilmington, Whiteville, and communities near the South Carolina border. North Carolina highways and nearby U.S. routes now give residents access to the rapidly developing coastal corridor. Improvements to roads throughout Brunswick County have become increasingly important as the county's population has grown and development has moved inland from beaches and waterfront communities.

Ash's community character remains closely connected to the natural landscape of southeastern North Carolina. The surrounding area includes forests, wetlands, agricultural properties, and waterways associated with the Waccamaw River basin. The nearby Green Swamp is one of the region's most distinctive natural environments and supports diverse plant and wildlife habitats. Churches, local schools, family farms, and multigenerational properties have historically provided much of the social framework for communities in this part of Brunswick County. This rural setting distinguishes Ash from the denser residential and tourism-oriented areas closer to the Atlantic Ocean.

Brunswick County changed dramatically during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as southeastern North Carolina became an increasingly popular destination for retirees, second-home owners, families, and people relocating from other parts of the country. Growth around Shallotte, Leland, Southport, and the county's beach communities created new economic opportunities while increasing demand for housing and infrastructure farther inland. Ash has experienced these changes at a more measured pace, allowing it to retain substantial areas of undeveloped land and traditional countryside while benefiting from improved access to shopping, healthcare, employment, and recreation elsewhere in the county.

Today, Ash appeals to homeowners who value privacy, larger properties, natural surroundings, and a quieter pace of life without being far removed from the attractions of the Carolina coast. Residents can reach beaches such as Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach as well as commercial services in Shallotte and destinations across the greater Wilmington region. The combination of rural landscapes and proximity to one of North Carolina's fastest-growing coastal counties gives Ash a distinctive position within Brunswick County. Its housing ranges from established rural residences to newer construction, reflecting both the area's longstanding agricultural heritage and the continuing evolution of southeastern North Carolina.
