Blacksburg, located near the South Carolina-North Carolina border, sits in an area rich with Revolutionary War heritage and natural beauty. Originally inhabited by Cherokee people, the land became part of European settlement patterns in the mid-18th century. The town's earliest roots date to a settlement known as "Stony Point," later renamed "Black's Station" in honor of John G. Black, a local landowner who donated land for the railroad.

The late 19th century marked Blacksburg's rise as a small but vibrant railroad town. When the Charlotte and Atlanta Railroad line extended through the area in 1876, commerce flourished. A year later, the community was incorporated as "Blacksburg," formalizing its role as a commercial hub between Gaffney and Kings Mountain. The discovery of iron ore nearby and the operation of furnaces in the region earned the nickname "Iron City." For a brief period in the 1890s, the town was even renamed "Iron City" before residents voted to restore the Blacksburg name.

Infrastructure and industry went hand in hand throughout Blacksburg's growth. The railroad defined the layout of downtown, with depots, warehouses, and businesses springing up along the main line. Roads connecting Blacksburg to Gaffney and Grover improved trade, and the area benefited from proximity to Interstate 85 in the 20th century. This highway access allowed new industries and commuters to settle in the region, strengthening ties with nearby cities.

Blacksburg's culture reflects its Southern roots and community-oriented traditions. Local schools, churches, and civic organizations remain central to daily life. Historical pride is evident in annual events and efforts to preserve Revolutionary War sites like Kings Mountain National Military Park, just minutes away.
