Blacksburg History
Blacksburg, South Carolina, often called the "Iron City," is a small town with a big place in Upstate history. Its roots trace back to the mid-18th century when the area was part of the hunting and trading territory of the Cherokee Nation. European settlers arrived soon after, attracted by the region's fertile soil and access to trade routes connecting North Carolina and South Carolina. Originally known as "Stark's Folly" after a local settler, the town gained prominence in the post-Civil War period when industrial and agricultural expansion reshaped the South.
The late 19th century brought a wave of transformation with the discovery of iron ore in the surrounding hills. Local businessman John G. Black founded the town officially in 1876, and it quickly became known as Blacksburg. The discovery of rich iron deposits made it one of the earliest industrial centers in the Upstate. Mining operations and foundries flourished, producing tools, machinery, and materials that supported regional growth. When the Richmond and Danville Railroad (later part of the Southern Railway) extended its line through Blacksburg, the town's prosperity accelerated. The railroad turned Blacksburg into a crucial shipping hub for iron, timber, and agricultural products.
At the turn of the 20th century, Blacksburg's economic expansion earned it the nickname "Iron City." During this period, mills and factories sprouted throughout the area, bringing workers and their families to settle in town. Schools, churches, and civic institutions were established, creating a thriving community atmosphere. Blacksburg also played a role in the textile boom that swept across the Carolinas, as nearby mills employed residents and spurred the development of mill villages. The town's location near the North Carolina border made it a gateway for commerce between the Carolinas, strengthening its strategic importance.
Infrastructure developments continued to shape Blacksburg's identity. U.S. Highway 29 and Interstate 85 placed the town along major transportation arteries connecting Spartanburg, Gaffney, and Charlotte. These routes not only enhanced trade but also encouraged new industries and commuters seeking small-town living within reach of larger cities. Despite the decline of iron mining, Blacksburg adapted, maintaining its agricultural base while expanding into light manufacturing and service sectors. The town's proximity to the historic Kings Mountain National Military Park and Crowders Mountain State Park added tourism and recreation to its economic landscape, drawing visitors to explore its rich Revolutionary War heritage and natural beauty.
Modern-day Blacksburg retains its small-town charm while embracing steady growth and community revitalization. Historic homes and buildings line quiet streets, while local businesses and restaurants offer a welcoming Southern ambiance. The town celebrates its heritage with events like the annual Iron City Festival, which highlights local artisans, history, and culture. Its excellent location near I-85 makes it a convenient home base for families and professionals commuting to Charlotte or Spartanburg. With its proud past, tight-knit community, and promising future, Blacksburg stands as a testament to South Carolina's enduring spirit of resilience and innovation.
