Bolton is a small town in eastern Columbus County within North Carolina's southeastern Coastal Plain. The region's history stretches back thousands of years, and Indigenous peoples established deep connections with the forests, wetlands, rivers, and lakes of southeastern North Carolina. This continuity has allowed rural landscapes and longstanding community relationships to remain prominent. At the same time, residents have benefited from improving road connections to Whiteville, Wilmington, and Brunswick County.

Residents have access to the recreational and ecological resources around Lake Waccamaw while remaining connected to employment and commercial centers in Whiteville, Wilmington, and the greater Cape Fear region.
