Boykin History
Boykin is an unincorporated community in Kershaw County that traces its heritage back to the mid-18th century. The area's fertile land near Swift Creek attracted early settlers, and by 1755 the Boykin family established their homestead. The creation of a mill pond by damming Swift Creek around 1792 provided water power for grist and saw mills, anchoring the settlement's early commercial life. During the Civil War, Boykin was the scene of one of the final skirmishes in the state—on April 18, 1865 a clash occurred near the mill pond just days after the war's official end, marking a significant moment in local history.
In the 19th century, Boykin's economy remained largely agrarian but was augmented by the mills that provided processing and jobs for local residents. Families farmed tobacco, cotton, and grain, while the presence of the mill encouraged support businesses such as general stores and blacksmith shops. The pond became a focal point for community life and the area's historic buildings—including the old grist mill—are still landmarks today.
As the 20th century unfolded, Boykin gradually shifted from purely rural commerce to a more residential character. Roads improved, automobile travel became common, and the community became increasingly accessible to workers commuting to Camden and beyond. While larger industrial growth bypassed Boykin, it benefited from nearby school consolidation and improved utilities, which made the area more attractive for living rather than solely farming.
Community identity in Boykin is strong—rooted in multi-generational families, historic sites such as the Boykin Mill and the surrounding pond, and local events that celebrate the region's heritage. The Boykin Spaniel, a hunting dog breed developed in the area, attests to the community's unique cultural contributions beyond what its size might suggest. While the population remains small, civic participation remains strong, and residents often emphasize local pride, quieter pace, and connection to history.
Today Boykin offers a peaceful residential environment with scenic property, historic charm and accessibility to larger towns in central-South Carolina. The presence of large lots, the mill pond, wooded surroundings and a relaxed pace make it ideal for those seeking country living with a strong sense of place. Though modest in facilities, Boykin's character is unmistakable, and its traditions continue to shape the community's future.
