Casar History
Casar's history begins in the early 19th century when settlers began pushing into what was then frontier land in Cleveland County. Around 1802, families such as Benjamin Newton, Ebenezer Newton, George Newton, and Peter Lewis claimed land and established homesteads in the area. These pioneer families laid down roots in dense forests, cleared fields, and built farms, small mills, or basic local industries. The region remained sparsely populated for decades, with communities centered around churches, crossroads, and schools.
Originally the town was incorporated under the name Race Path in 1890. Four years later, when seeking a more formal name, officials chose "Caesar," intending to honor the Roman figure. Due to a postal clerk's error in Washington, it became spelled "Casar." That misspelling stuck; it was not until 1973 that the state officially recognized the spelling as Casar. This naming error is now part of local identity and folklore.
As Casar grew, a few local entrepreneurs and families shaped its early economy. Local businessmen like John Jones and members of the Fortenberry family operated general stores, agricultural services, and essential supply lines. Some residents also provided services to surrounding farms and communities. Casar functioned as a small service hub without major industry, sustaining itself via agriculture, tradesmen, and local commerce.
Over time, infrastructure improvements modestly integrated Casar into regional networks. Roads connecting Casar to Shelby, Grover, and Boiling Springs allowed farmers and residents to bring goods to broader markets. Improvements in rural electrification, telephone, and road paving during the mid-20th century enhanced connectivity. Still, Casar remained a quiet, small town, largely residential and agricultural in nature.
In the present day, Casar retains a relaxed, rural charm. Homes are often on generous lots amid trees and farmland. Its residents appreciate quiet living with easy access to Shelby and other larger towns. The local school tradition runs deep, and community life centers around church, school events, and local civic gatherings. While growth has occurred, Casar's pace is gradual, with a focus on preserving its past as it embraces modest modernization and service expansion.
