Castle Hayne is an unincorporated community in northern New Hanover County, positioned along the Northeast Cape Fear River just north of Wilmington. The broader region was inhabited by Indigenous peoples long before European colonization, with rivers, creeks, wetlands, forests, and coastal resources providing transportation and sustenance. European settlement expanded through the Cape Fear region during the eighteenth century as Wilmington developed into an important port. Farms, plantations, timber operations, churches, and small settlements spread outward from the river corridors. Castle Hayne eventually emerged as a distinct community within this landscape, benefiting from its proximity to both the Northeast Cape Fear River and the growing city of Wilmington.

Agriculture and forestry shaped much of Castle Hayne's early economy. The fertile lands and forests of northern New Hanover County supported farms producing corn, vegetables, livestock, and other commodities, while the region's pine forests contributed to the naval-stores industry that was once central to North Carolina's economy. Tar, pitch, rosin, and turpentine produced throughout the Cape Fear region could be transported toward Wilmington for trade. Timber and lumber later became important industries as well. The community's rural surroundings allowed agriculture to remain visible even as Wilmington gradually expanded northward.

Transportation played an increasingly important role in Castle Hayne's development. Rail connections and regional roads linked northern New Hanover County with Wilmington and communities farther inland. Castle Hayne Road became an important local route, while nearby Interstate 40 eventually provided much faster access to Wilmington, Raleigh, and other parts of North Carolina. Interstate 140 and additional roadway improvements have further changed travel patterns around northern New Hanover County, helping connect Castle Hayne with Brunswick and Pender counties as well as the larger Wilmington metropolitan area.

Castle Hayne's proximity to the Northeast Cape Fear River has also influenced its geography and community character. Low-lying areas, wetlands, forests, and riverine environments remain significant features of the surrounding landscape. These natural conditions have shaped land use and development while providing habitat for wildlife and contributing to the ecological diversity of the lower Cape Fear region. The area's location away from the immediate Atlantic shoreline gives Castle Hayne a different character from New Hanover County's beach communities while still placing residents within easy reach of coastal recreation.

During the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, development throughout the Wilmington region began extending farther into northern New Hanover County. Residential neighborhoods, businesses, industrial properties, and institutional facilities expanded around established rural communities. Castle Hayne increasingly became part of the metropolitan growth corridor while retaining areas of open land and longstanding residential development. Its accessibility to downtown Wilmington, the airport, major highways, and employment centers made it attractive to homeowners who wanted additional space without moving far from the city.

Today, Castle Hayne offers a mixture of rural heritage, suburban growth, and convenient regional access. The local housing landscape includes established homes, properties on larger lots, newer subdivisions, and construction associated with the continuing expansion of greater Wilmington. Residents can reach downtown Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, shopping districts, healthcare facilities, and employment centers while remaining close to the Northeast Cape Fear River and the natural landscapes of northern New Hanover County. This combination of accessibility and comparatively lower-density development continues to shape Castle Hayne's residential appeal.
