The town of Central, South Carolina, was founded in the early 1870s as a railroad hub during a time of rapid industrial expansion across the Upstate. Its name, "Central," comes from its position midway between Atlanta and Charlotte on the Southern Railway line. The construction of better roads, public utilities, and schools helped modernize Central, allowing it to keep pace with the broader economic development of the Upstate.
