Railroads remained vital to local commerce well into the mid-1900s, and the construction of major routes like U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 52 strengthened Cheraw's position as a transportation hub in northeastern South Carolina. The town also benefited from its location near the North Carolina border, which provided access to additional trade and manufacturing opportunities.
