Cheraw History
Cheraw, South Carolina, is one of the oldest inland towns in the state, with roots reaching back to the mid-18th century. The region was originally inhabited by the Cheraw and Pee Dee Native American tribes, who thrived along the banks of the Great Pee Dee River. European settlers began arriving in the 1730s, drawn by the fertile soil and abundant river access that made the area ideal for agriculture and trade. The town was formally established in the 1740s and quickly became a key river port, earning the nickname "The Prettiest Town in Dixie" for its beauty and strategic setting. During the American Revolution, Cheraw played a notable role as both a supply center and a contested military post.
By the early 19th century, Cheraw had grown into a prosperous trade town, serving as a shipping point for cotton, lumber, and other goods bound for Georgetown and Charleston via the Pee Dee River. The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s enhanced its economic importance, linking it more efficiently with markets throughout the South. Agriculture, particularly cotton production, dominated the local economy, and merchants, artisans, and planters made Cheraw one of the wealthiest communities in the Pee Dee region. During the Civil War, Cheraw briefly served as a Confederate stronghold before being occupied by Union troops under General William T. Sherman in 1865. Fortunately, unlike many towns during that period, much of Cheraw's historic architecture survived.
Infrastructure development continued to shape Cheraw's growth throughout the 20th century. Railroads remained vital to local commerce well into the mid-1900s, and the construction of major routes like U.S. Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 52 strengthened Cheraw's position as a transportation hub in northeastern South Carolina. The town also benefited from its location near the North Carolina border, which provided access to additional trade and manufacturing opportunities. Investments in utilities, schools, and public spaces further modernized the community while preserving its historic character.
Cheraw's charm is deeply rooted in its architectural heritage and cultural identity. The town boasts a remarkably well-preserved historic district featuring antebellum homes, churches, and commercial buildings shaded by old oaks and magnolias. Cheraw State Park, established in the 1930s as one of the first state parks in South Carolina, remains a centerpiece of outdoor recreation with its lake, golf course, and trails. The town's cultural life is vibrant as well, highlighted by the annual South Carolina Jazz Festival, which honors Cheraw native Dizzy Gillespie, the world-renowned jazz trumpeter and composer. Community events, arts programs, and civic engagement contribute to the area's enduring appeal.
Today, Cheraw combines the grace of its historic past with the conveniences of modern living. Residents enjoy a peaceful lifestyle with easy access to natural beauty, strong schools, and a thriving small-business community. The town continues to attract new homeowners and visitors drawn by its affordability, charm, and cultural vitality. From its early beginnings as a riverside trading post to its reputation as one of South Carolina's most picturesque and historically rich towns, Cheraw stands as a proud testament to Southern heritage and community spirit.
