Clemson, South Carolina, occupies a historically rich region in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the western edge of Pickens County. Long before European settlement, the Cherokee people inhabited the lands that now encompass Clemson and its neighboring communities. The nearby Keowee and Seneca rivers provided fertile soil and abundant wildlife, making the area a center of Cherokee life. When Thomas Clemson passed away in 1888, he left his estate and land to the state of South Carolina to establish an agricultural college. In 1889, Clemson Agricultural College was founded, marking the beginning of an institution that would grow into one of the most influential universities in the Southeast. The town that developed around the campus took its name from Clemson himself.

The economy of early Clemson revolved around the university and agriculture. Farms in the surrounding foothills produced cotton, corn, and livestock, while the college served as a center for agricultural research and innovation. The arrival of the Southern Railway enhanced the town's accessibility, connecting it with major cities such as Greenville, Atlanta, and Charlotte. As Clemson College expanded through the 20th century, it attracted a growing number of students, educators, and businesses, transforming the once-rural area into a vibrant college town.

Clemson's infrastructure evolved alongside its university. The construction of Lake Hartwell in the 1950s brought dramatic changes to the area's landscape.
