The small community of Converse, South Carolina, located in Spartanburg County, traces its origins to the height of the textile boom that defined much of the Upstate during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Before the rise of industry, the land along the Pacolet River was home to early European settlers who farmed its fertile soil and depended on local gristmills for grain processing. The area also held significance for the Cherokee Nation before settlement, as the river provided an important natural resource and transportation route. Spartanburg County itself was formed in 1785, and by the time of the Civil War, the foundations of what would become Converse were already taking shape through small farming and trade networks.

The town's identity became firmly established with the founding of Converse Mill, a textile plant built in 1896 by Captain John H. Montgomery, one of Spartanburg's most influential industrialists. Montgomery named the mill and its surrounding community after Converse College, a liberal arts college in nearby Spartanburg founded in 1889 and named for textile magnate Dexter Edgar Converse. The Converse Mill was strategically positioned on the Pacolet River, which provided reliable water power for its operations. As the mill flourished, it became the centerpiece of a growing village that included worker housing, stores, and community facilities—a hallmark of South Carolina's textile era.

Transportation and infrastructure were integral to Converse's success. The Southern Railway connected Spartanburg's many mill towns, including Converse, Clifton, and Pacolet, to regional markets. The accessibility of rail transport allowed the Converse Mill to ship its cotton yarns and fabrics across the Southeast, helping sustain the local economy for decades. Over time, paved roads and highways replaced many of the rail-dependent routes, but Converse's proximity to Spartanburg and major thoroughfares such as Interstate 85 kept it economically connected to the broader region.

Life in Converse during the early to mid-20th century revolved around the mill village. The tight-knit community shared a strong sense of identity centered on hard work, family, and church. Local schools and social halls served as gathering places, and residents often passed down employment at the mill through generations. Although the decline of the textile industry in the late 20th century brought economic challenges, Converse remained resilient. The mill, which once represented the beating heart of the town, has since been partially redeveloped and preserved as a historic landmark, reminding residents of their industrial heritage.

Today, Converse is a quiet and close-knit community that offers the charm of small-town life with convenient access to Spartanburg's growing urban amenities. The Pacolet River continues to define the landscape, providing scenic views and recreational opportunities such as kayaking and fishing. Many of the original mill houses still stand, giving the community a distinctive architectural character that reflects its past. Converse has become a desirable residential area for those seeking a peaceful setting near one of South Carolina's most dynamic cities.
