The story of Cooleemee, North Carolina, begins long before its formal establishment, rooted in the natural abundance of the Yadkin River valley. Native American tribes, including the Saponi and Catawba, once occupied this fertile region, relying on the river's resources for food, transportation, and trade. European settlers began arriving in the late 18th century, drawn by the fertile soil and water power potential. The town's name, "Cooleemee," is believed to have derived from a Native American term referencing the nearby river, reflecting the area's deep indigenous connections.
