The town of Dallas, North Carolina, serves as one of Gaston County's oldest and most historically significant communities. Founded in 1846, Dallas was named after George M. Dallas, who served as Vice President of the United States under President James K. Polk. The land that would become Dallas originally belonged to the Catawba and Cherokee peoples, whose trails and hunting grounds stretched across the rolling Piedmont hills. When Gaston County was formed from Lincoln County in 1846, Dallas was selected as the county seat due to its central location. The courthouse square continued to serve as a focal point, surrounded by small businesses, historic homes, and churches. Over time, Dallas grew into a commuter-friendly town for residents working in Gastonia, Charlotte, and other nearby urban centers. Despite this modern development, the town's historic district—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—maintains much of its 19th-century charm, with preserved architecture reflecting Greek Revival, Colonial, and Victorian influences.
