Deepstep has its roots in the early settlement of what is now Washington County. Indigenous peoples inhabited the region long before European colonization, with Creek and other Native American groups using the land for hunting and small-scale agriculture. After Georgia's statehood and subsequent county formations, Washington County was organized in the late 18th century. Deepstep Creek, which runs nearby, gave the area its name. A post office was established in 1886, and Deepstep was incorporated as the Town of Deepstep by the Georgia General Assembly in 1900.

The local economy historically has been shaped by agriculture and natural resources. The surrounding lands supported farms and timber operations, and Deepstep is in the heart of Georgia's kaolin mining country. The mining of kaolin—a kind of clay used in ceramics, paper, and many other products—has been important to jobs and land use locally.

Over time, infrastructure improved modestly as transportation routes, roads, and postal services connected Deepstep to other towns. While there was never a large railroad through Deepstep itself, county roads and state routes allowed produce and mining material to move out. Electricity, telecommunication, and public services followed changes in the wider region. The Deepstep United Methodist Church, for example, has been part of early community infrastructure, tracing its organization back to around 1805, and with its present sanctuary built in 1901.

Community character in Deepstep is intimate and rural. With a very small population and long-standing family ties, many residents have lived there for generations. The town retains a quiet pace, with local institutions like churches playing central social roles. Heritage events, local gatherings, and a strong sense of place define the social life.

In modern times, Deepstep offers residential appeal for those seeking a rural lifestyle, away from urban congestion. It has modest amenities but proximity to larger towns gives access to shopping, medical services, and schools. The landscape is peaceful, with natural surroundings, making it attractive to people interested in country living. While growth is limited, Deepstep's identity and history give it a strong sense of cohesion and tradition.
