Demorest History
The land where Demorest is now located was granted by the State of Georgia to W. Stripling in 1829. For many years Stripling maintained the land largely as a family farm. In 1840, Dr. Paul Rossignol acquired the land and built a summer home on the west side of what is now Lake Demorest, which later played a role in the development of the community.
Demorest was platted in 1890 as a temperance town—meaning its founders promoted abstinence from alcohol. It was named after William Jennings Demorest, a well-known prohibition advocate. The city was incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly in 1889. Piedmont College, now Piedmont University, was established in 1897, becoming a center of education and culture in the area.
Economically, Demorest has benefited from its role in education and small-business development. Agriculture, local mills, and trade contributed in earlier periods, while in later times services, education, and small manufacturing have supplemented the local economy. The existence of a commercial historic district in downtown Demorest, with buildings from around 1890 to the early 1930s, reflects its early development and architectural heritage.
Infrastructure in Demorest developed alongside its institutions. With roads connecting it to neighboring towns such as Clarkesville and Cornelia, utilities and public services expanded. The presence of Piedmont University has driven certain improvements: school facilities, public buildings, and parks. Demorest maintains a water system that serves not only the city but portions of the surrounding county.
Demographically, Demorest remains small but stable. Its population is just over 2,000, and it has a close-knit community feel, anchored by its university, churches, and small local businesses. Cultural events and educational programs are significant locally. The downtown area, with its historic architecture, shops, and parks, gives the city a unique character. Today, Demorest is attractive for residents who value education, quiet living, and scenic surroundings in Northeast Georgia.
