Dobbins Air Reserve Base History
The site now known as Dobbins Air Reserve Base was constructed during World War II in 1943, originally called Marietta Army Airfield. It was created as part of the wartime mobilization for aviation and aircraft production. After 1948 it was renamed Marietta Air Force Base, and in 1950 the base was renamed to honor Captain Charles M. Dobbins, a Marietta native and World War II pilot who died on his 88th mission.
Through the Cold War and later years, the base shifted roles among active duty, reserve, transport, and airlift missions. It has housed units such as the 94th Airlift Wing under the Air Force Reserve Command, and over time it has also supported National Guard aviation, training, and various mission support operations. In 1992, it was re-designated from Dobbins Air Force Base to Dobbins Air Reserve Base.
Infrastructure and connections have evolved over decades with expanded runways, hangars, aircraft manufacturing, and support facilities. The base also played roles in aircraft production during WWII. Its location in Marietta meant that as the city grew, the surrounding housing, utilities, and roads developed in parallel.
The community character around Dobbins ARB is shaped by its military presence. Many neighborhoods include service members, civilian employees, and contractors. The base contributes economically through jobs, contracting, and infrastructure investment. Over time, as aviation technology and defense needs changed, the base adapted its missions accordingly.
Today, Dobbins Air Reserve Base remains an active facility, with modern amenities, updated runways, and support for reserve and National Guard functions. Residential areas nearby offer convenience for those commuting to or supporting base functions. Proximity to the Atlanta metro region gives access to city amenities, commerce, and culture, creating a unique blend of military and suburban life.
