Doraville History
Doraville was incorporated on December 15, 1871, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. Initially, it was a small agricultural community serving nearby farms and market routes.
Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Doraville remained modest in size, with rural roads, local commerce, small stores, lumber yards, and basic institutions meeting community needs. Its proximity to rail lines and its position in DeKalb County made it a candidate for growth. After World War II, key infrastructural changes transformed Doraville. The establishment of sewer and water systems, new roads, and expanding public transit lines made possible significant residential and industrial growth.
A major economic development came when General Motors built the Doraville Assembly Plant in 1947. This plant spurred population growth, suburbanization, and industrial employment. Residential subdivisions followed, neighborhoods expanded, and the city's economy diversified beyond agriculture into manufacturing, services, retail, and transportation.
Demographically, Doraville has become one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse places in the Atlanta metro area. Since the late 20th century, significant immigrant communities—especially from Asia and Latin America—have made Doraville home to many new cultures, businesses, and traditions. The opening of the MARTA station in 1992 boosted connectivity, commuting, and integration into greater Atlanta.
Today, Doraville is a suburban city with mixed residential, commercial, and industrial zones. While the GM plant has closed and later demolished, redevelopment plans are shaping its future. Transit-oriented growth, retail, and cultural amenities make Doraville attractive for homeowners seeking diversity, good commuting options, and access to metropolitan Atlanta's lifestyle.
