Edgemoor lies in the northern reaches of Chester County, extending into southern York County, within the rolling Piedmont hills of South Carolina. Before European settlement, this land formed part of the traditional hunting and travel routes of the Catawba Nation, whose influence stretched across the Catawba River valley. The area's fertile soil and abundant timber made it attractive to early settlers arriving from Virginia and North Carolina in the 1700s. Small farms and plantation tracts soon appeared, growing cotton, tobacco, and grain. The creation of Chester County in 1785 formally established governance over the area, and by the 19th century, Edgemoor began emerging as a distinct rural community.

Agriculture defined Edgemoor's early economy, and cotton was king for much of the 19th century. When the Seaboard Air Line Railroad constructed its line through this part of the Piedmont, Edgemoor became a station stop, giving farmers and merchants direct access to shipping routes for cotton, timber, and livestock. This small but vital link fostered the creation of a post office, mercantile stores, and churches that became the heart of community life.

Throughout the 20th century, Edgemoor retained its rural charm while gradually integrating modern infrastructure. Paved roads and electric lines reached the area mid-century, connecting it to nearby Chester and Rock Hill. U.S. Highway 21 provided a reliable corridor between Charlotte and Columbia, passing near Edgemoor and supporting modest commercial and residential growth. Though it never incorporated as a municipality, Edgemoor's identity remained strong—a crossroads community where church, school, and family were intertwined.

The Edgemoor community embodies traditional southern small-town character. Families often trace their ancestry through multiple generations of farmers and craftsmen who lived and worked in the area. Churches such as Bethesda Presbyterian and Mount Prospect Baptist Church have long served as social and spiritual centers. Annual gatherings, high-school sports, and volunteer fire-department events reinforce that sense of belonging. While many residents commute to Chester, York, or Charlotte for employment, Edgemoor retains a quiet, close-knit culture that values heritage and connection.

In modern times, Edgemoor blends old and new. The rolling farmland and open tracts remain, but residential neighborhoods have begun to emerge, appealing to those seeking a peaceful alternative to urban life while maintaining easy access to metropolitan amenities. Families appreciate the proximity to Lake Wylie, Chester State Park, and regional recreation areas, as well as the short drive to shopping and dining in Rock Hill. With its roots deep in agricultural history and its outlook aligned with steady rural-suburban balance, Edgemoor continues to represent the enduring strength and warmth of South Carolina's upcountry communities.
