The region that includes Farmington lies in Oconee County, which itself was carved out in 1875 from parts of Clarke, Morgan, and Oglethorpe counties. Before its creation, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, notably the Creek people, whose trails and settlements shaped early travel routes. As European-American settlers moved in during the early 19th century, they established farms, homesteads, and small communities in the fertile lands of central Georgia.

The name "Farmington" reflects the area's strong agricultural roots. By the early 20th century, the town was formally incorporated (in 1919) to serve the farming district, offering a local center for farming supplies, social interaction, and community services. Crops such as cotton and corn, along with livestock, made up much of the local economy. Communities gathered around churches and neighborhood markets, forming tight social bonds.

Transportation developments were important for Farmington's growth. The presence of U.S. Routes 129 / 441 (which pass near or through the area) provided key arterial links to nearby towns and markets. Over time, roads were improved, utilities introduced, and services like postal delivery and telegraph supported local commerce and communication. Although Farmington's town charter was later repealed (1995), the infrastructure built during its incorporated years left a lasting legacy.

The character of the Farmington community is rooted in rural life. Families used to engage in multi-generation farming. Schools, local churches, and community centers became focal points. The social fabric included local festivals, fairs, and gatherings that emphasized agricultural cycles and rural traditions. The community maintained a close relationship with the land and environment.

Today, although Farmington is unincorporated, it retains a strong rural identity. The area offers peaceful surroundings, open space, and a slower pace of life, balanced by proximity to Watkinsville and Athens for services, shopping, and employment. Many residents appreciate the mix of country living with access to county amenities. Homeowners in the area often value wide lots, older farmhouses, and the sense of community that comes with rural Georgia.
