In 1817, Joseph Finger, a German immigrant, established one of the region's earliest textile mills on the riverbank — giving the community its name. The Finger family's mill became a local economic anchor, producing cotton goods for nearby markets and marking Fingerville as one of the early centers of South Carolina's textile industry.

As the textile industry grew across the Upstate in the 19th century, Fingerville's mill village thrived.
