Fort Moore History
Fort Moore, originally established as Camp Benning in 1918, has long served as a major military training facility in Georgia. The land on which it sits was once plantation land, and its establishment was part of the U.S. Army's expansion during World War I, originally to serve as a home for the Infantry. As the facility grew, permanent features were developed, schools of instruction established, and the base's footprint expanded.
Over time, the base played a vital role in multiple conflicts and periods of military growth. During World War II, Fort Moore's training capacities expanded significantly as tens of thousands of soldiers passed through as part of the war effort. After the war ended, the base transitioned to a more stable training mission, with infrastructure improvements and permanent buildings replacing many of the temporary facilities of earlier decades.
Transportation and infrastructure around Fort Moore have evolved hand in hand with its military role. Access roads, rail spurs, and highway connections were improved to supply the base and support personnel. Housing for military families, medical facilities, schools, and supporting services have expanded as the surrounding civilian areas have grown. Utilities and public services (water, power, sewer) have been incrementally upgraded over many decades.
Community character around Fort Moore reflects both the military culture and the mix of civilians and military families. Schools, shopping, and community services cater to an ever-moving population, as soldiers are stationed and moved. Cultural events, military ceremonies, recreational facilities, and support organizations form a strong part of life there. Many local businesses and neighborhoods serve families connected to the base.
Today, Fort Moore remains one of Georgia's key military installations. It offers modern amenities, updated training facilities, and support systems for military and civilian life. The presence of the base supports employment, commerce, and infrastructure in its surroundings. For homeowners in Fort Moore, the appeal lies in access to these services, well-developed utilities, strong security, and the blend of military heritage with the conveniences of modern living.
