Gastonia, the county seat of Gaston County, was founded in 1877 during the post-Reconstruction industrial surge that swept through the Carolina Piedmont. Originally part of a large rural farming community, Gastonia developed rapidly after the completion of the Atlanta & Charlotte Air Line Railroad. The town was named after William Gaston, a respected North Carolina Supreme Court judge. In its early days, Gastonia was a modest settlement with just a few stores and a train depot, but it would soon emerge as a powerhouse of the textile industry in the American South.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw Gastonia transform into one of the most significant textile manufacturing centers in the Southeast. Dozens of mills were built, producing cotton yarn, cloth, and hosiery that supplied both regional and national markets. By the 1920s, Gastonia had become known for its industrious labor force and thriving mill villages. However, the town also became a focal point of labor struggles, most notably the 1929 Loray Mill Strike, which gained national attention as one of the largest and most violent labor disputes in Southern history.

As the 20th century progressed, Gastonia diversified beyond textiles. The construction of U.S. Highway 74 and later Interstate 85 turned the city into a key transportation and commercial hub between Charlotte and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Manufacturing expanded into other sectors, including metal fabrication, furniture, and automotive components. The presence of Gastonia's municipal airport and access to the Norfolk Southern Railway further strengthened its logistics and industrial base.

Culturally, Gastonia developed into a dynamic urban center. Its downtown area, home to historic landmarks such as the Gaston County Courthouse and the former Loray Mill, has undergone revitalization in recent years. Parks like Rankin Lake and the Schiele Museum of Natural History offer recreation and education for families. The community is known for its strong schools, churches, and civic pride, with events like the annual Christmas parade and summer concert series drawing residents together.

Today, Gastonia stands as the largest city in Gaston County and one of the principal suburbs of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Its blend of historic architecture, affordable housing, and proximity to Charlotte make it an attractive destination for homeowners and businesses alike.
