Greensboro, the county seat of Greene County, was incorporated in 1803 and named after Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene. The area was originally inhabited by Creek and Cherokee peoples before European settlers arrived in the late 18th century. Greene County itself was established in 1786, and Greensboro quickly developed into a regional hub due to its location along major transportation routes in central Georgia.

Cotton agriculture defined Greensboro's economic life throughout the 19th century. Plantations relied heavily on enslaved labor until emancipation, and after the Civil War, tenant farming and sharecropping dominated the local economy. The town prospered as a center of cotton trade, with warehouses and gins fueling growth. Railroads were central to Greensboro's development, linking it to larger markets in Atlanta and Augusta. Later, the expansion of highways, including Interstate 20, placed Greensboro on a major east-west transportation corridor, further boosting its accessibility and appeal.

Greensboro has long been known for its community institutions, including schools, churches, and civic organizations. Historic architecture, such as antebellum homes and public buildings, reflects the town's rich past. Community events, festivals, and cultural traditions highlight its small-town Southern heritage. Over time, the city's population diversified, and the area became a blend of historic preservation and modern development.
