Greensboro's history begins in the late 18th century when settlers moved into the Piedmont region seeking fertile farmland, favorable terrain, and a central location within the newly formed Guilford County. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including groups related to the Saura and Keyauwee. The county was established in 1771, and a central administrative town became necessary after the American Revolution. The chosen site for the new county seat was named Greensboro in 1808 to honor General Nathanael Greene, the Continental Army commander known for his strategic leadership during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Though the battle took place a few miles north of present-day downtown, its legacy shaped the region's early identity, and Greensboro quickly grew from a small courthouse village into a thriving Piedmont community.

While textile and tobacco industries gradually declined, the city attracted new sectors including logistics, manufacturing, education, and corporate business services. Its prime location at the intersection of major interstate corridors helped Greensboro develop into a leading transportation and distribution center.
