Hamilton, the county seat of Harris County, was incorporated in 1828 and named after James Hamilton Jr., a South Carolina governor who supported states' rights. The region was originally Creek Indian territory before being opened to settlers in the early 19th century. The fertile lands of Harris County made the area attractive for farming, and Hamilton quickly became a central hub of administration, trade, and community life.

Agriculture defined Hamilton's economy for much of the 19th century, with cotton plantations dominating the landscape. Enslaved labor supported these plantations until emancipation, after which sharecropping and tenant farming became widespread. Later, U.S. Highway 27 made Hamilton easily accessible from Columbus and LaGrange, enhancing its role as a county seat. The highway and improved infrastructure allowed for steady growth, while the nearby Pine Mountain ridge and natural resources brought visitors to the area.

Community life in Hamilton has long revolved around civic institutions and cultural traditions. Schools, churches, and county government buildings shaped the town's identity. Residents took pride in their role as the heart of Harris County, supporting local events, festivals, and historical preservation. Hamilton's courthouse square remains a focal point for community activity and symbolizes its historic character.

Families are drawn to its small-town atmosphere, quality schools, and natural attractions, including Callaway Gardens and F.D. Roosevelt State Park.
