The city of Hampton, South Carolina, serves as the county seat of Hampton County and has roots tracing back to the late 19th century. Before its establishment, the area was largely inhabited by Native American tribes and early European settlers who farmed the fertile lands of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Hampton was officially incorporated in 1878, shortly after Hampton County was formed from parts of Beaufort County. The town was named in honor of Wade Hampton III, a Confederate general and influential post-Civil War governor of South Carolina.

During its early years, Hampton thrived as an agricultural hub, with cotton, corn, and timber forming the backbone of the economy. Events such as the Hampton County Watermelon Festival, one of the longest-running festivals in South Carolina, highlight the town's deep sense of pride and hospitality.
