Hampton History
The city of Hampton, South Carolina, serves as the county seat of Hampton County and has roots tracing back to the late 19th century. Before its establishment, the area was largely inhabited by Native American tribes and early European settlers who farmed the fertile lands of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Hampton was officially incorporated in 1878, shortly after Hampton County was formed from parts of Beaufort County. The town was named in honor of Wade Hampton III, a Confederate general and influential post-Civil War governor of South Carolina.
During its early years, Hampton thrived as an agricultural hub, with cotton, corn, and timber forming the backbone of the economy. The arrival of the railroad was a turning point, enabling local farmers to ship goods to Charleston and Savannah efficiently. The town became a center for commerce in the region, with general stores, mills, and cotton gins supporting the rural economy. Over time, Hampton developed a strong civic structure, establishing schools, churches, and a courthouse that remains a prominent landmark.
Throughout the 20th century, infrastructure continued to improve in and around Hampton. U.S. Highway 278 and other regional routes connected the town to nearby cities such as Allendale and Walterboro. These transportation corridors encouraged business growth and made Hampton more accessible. Despite its modernization, Hampton retained its small-town feel and agricultural roots, with a landscape characterized by fields, forests, and winding creeks.
Culturally, Hampton is a community that values tradition and togetherness. Events such as the Hampton County Watermelon Festival, one of the longest-running festivals in South Carolina, highlight the town's deep sense of pride and hospitality. The festival, along with numerous community gatherings and church activities, continues to bring residents and visitors together each year.
Today, Hampton represents the best of rural South Carolina living. Its charming downtown, historical sites, and welcoming atmosphere make it a desirable place to live and work. Residents enjoy a slower pace of life while remaining close to larger hubs like Beaufort and Hilton Head. Hampton's strong community values, beautiful surroundings, and steady economic foundation continue to define its enduring appeal.
