Kannapolis History
Kannapolis, North Carolina, has one of the most distinctive origin stories in the state. Located primarily in Cabarrus County with portions extending into Rowan County, the city was founded in the early 20th century as a mill town built by the Cannon family, owners of Cannon Mills, once one of the world's largest textile manufacturing companies. The area's history, however, begins long before the rise of the textile industry. Early settlers arrived in the late 1700s and early 1800s, drawn to the fertile land of the Piedmont region. These pioneers were largely of German, Scotch-Irish, and English descent, farming small tracts of land and building the foundations of what would later become a major industrial community.
The transformation of Kannapolis began in 1906, when James W. Cannon established Cannon Manufacturing Company, which would go on to produce towels and other textile goods on a massive scale. The community that grew around the mill was built to support the company's operations and its workers, with mill houses, schools, stores, and churches all constructed under the direction of the company. Kannapolis was, in essence, a "company town," where nearly every aspect of life revolved around the mill. For decades, the Cannon Mills complex served as the beating heart of the local economy and identity, employing thousands of residents and shaping the social fabric of the area. The mill's products were known worldwide, and "Cannon towels" became synonymous with quality and Southern craftsmanship.
Throughout the 20th century, Kannapolis evolved alongside the textile industry. The arrival of new transportation routes—including U.S. Highway 29 and the Southern Railway—further fueled its growth, connecting Kannapolis to larger markets in Charlotte, Salisbury, and beyond. The downtown district grew to include theaters, shops, and restaurants that served mill families and visitors alike. However, like many mill towns, Kannapolis faced economic challenges in the latter half of the century. When Pillowtex, the successor to Cannon Mills, declared bankruptcy in 2003, the closure marked the end of an era. Thousands lost their jobs, and the once-thriving industrial complex stood silent.
Yet Kannapolis refused to fade into history. In a remarkable act of revitalization, the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) was established on the former mill site in 2005, spearheaded by billionaire David H. Murdock, the owner of Dole Food Company. The NCRC became a state-of-the-art research hub dedicated to nutrition, health, and agricultural science, attracting partnerships with major universities and organizations. This initiative transformed Kannapolis from an industrial town to a center of innovation and research, marking one of the most dramatic economic and cultural reinventions in the region.
Today, Kannapolis is a vibrant and growing city with a renewed sense of purpose. Its downtown has undergone extensive redevelopment, blending historic architecture with modern amenities. The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, a Minor League Baseball team named in honor of the city's textile legacy, play in the new Atrium Health Ballpark, which has become a centerpiece of community pride and activity. Residents enjoy a high quality of life with access to parks, trails, schools, and events that celebrate the city's heritage. Kannapolis continues to balance progress and tradition—honoring its roots as a hardworking mill town while embracing a future defined by research, education, and innovation.
