Knoxville History
Knoxville, Georgia, traces its roots back to the early 19th century when Crawford County was established in 1822 from portions of Houston County. The town was named after General Henry Knox, a Revolutionary War hero, and it soon became the county seat. Before European settlement, this region was inhabited by the Muscogee (Creek) people, whose legacy remains visible through place names and cultural history that shaped much of west-central Georgia.
Agriculture defined Knoxville's early economy. Cotton was the dominant crop, supported by small farms and plantations, and the town thrived as a rural hub for surrounding farmland. The county courthouse, one of Georgia's oldest brick courthouses, was constructed in Knoxville in the 1830s, and it symbolized the area's importance as a civic center. While the cotton economy diminished after the Civil War, farming remained an important livelihood for residents.
Over time, Knoxville was bypassed by the Macon and Western Railroad, which was built through nearby Roberta. This diversion limited Knoxville's growth, yet preserved its historic small-town character. Today, U.S. Highway 80 serves as the main route through Crawford County, keeping Knoxville connected while retaining its rural pace of life.
