Laurinburg is the county seat of Scotland County and one of the most historically significant communities in southeastern North Carolina. The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples who lived off the region's fertile land and nearby waterways. European settlement began in earnest during the late eighteenth century as Scottish Highland immigrants and other settlers moved into the area, drawn by farmland and opportunity. Laurinburg's name reflects this heritage, combining "Laura," reportedly the name of an early settler's wife, with "burg," a term commonly used in Scottish and European town names. Scotland County itself was formed in 1899, with Laurinburg selected as its seat due to its central location and growing importance.

Agriculture shaped Laurinburg's early economy, with cotton, tobacco, corn, and small grains serving as primary crops. Public buildings, schools, and utilities were constructed as Laurinburg assumed its role as county seat, reinforcing its importance as an administrative and service center for Scotland County.

The establishment of educational institutions, including St. Andrews University, contributed to the city's intellectual and cultural life. Churches, civic organizations, and local events fostered a strong sense of community and identity. Over time, Laurinburg became more diverse, reflecting broader demographic changes across the region.
