Bolivia is a small town with an outsized civic role as the county seat of Brunswick County. The surrounding region was inhabited by Indigenous peoples long before European settlement, with rivers, creeks, forests, wetlands, and coastal resources supporting communities throughout southeastern North Carolina. Brunswick County was created in 1764, but its governmental center changed over time as population patterns and transportation networks evolved. Bolivia eventually became the county seat during the twentieth century, giving this relatively small community an important administrative role in one of North Carolina's largest and fastest-growing coastal counties.

North Carolina Highway 211 developed into a major east-west route through the area, providing connections toward Southport and the coast in one direction and inland communities in the other. U.S. Highway 17, located nearby, became one of the principal transportation corridors through coastal North Carolina and helped connect Brunswick County with Wilmington to the northeast and the Grand Strand region of South Carolina to the southwest. These road networks increased Bolivia's accessibility and supported government services, businesses, schools, and residential development.

Bolivia's identity is strongly influenced by its role in county government and public services. The Brunswick County government complex and related institutions bring residents from communities across the county into the area for administrative and civic needs. Brunswick Community College, located nearby, has also contributed to education, workforce development, and community life. The town itself remains relatively small, but its position within county operations gives it regional importance beyond what its population alone might suggest. Its location also places residents within easy reach of coastal recreation while preserving a less densely developed setting.

The broader Bolivia area has experienced considerable change as Brunswick County's population has expanded. Growth from Wilmington has pushed south and west, while development around Southport, Oak Island, Shallotte, and other coastal communities has increased demand for housing throughout the county. New neighborhoods and residential properties have appeared alongside older homes, farms, and wooded tracts. This mix reflects Brunswick County's transition from a historically rural coastal county into a major residential and retirement destination while still preserving substantial areas of its traditional landscape.

Modern Bolivia offers homeowners a central location within Brunswick County, convenient access to county services, and relatively short drives to Southport, Oak Island, Wilmington, and other coastal destinations. Residents can enjoy the quieter character of an inland community while remaining close to beaches, waterways, golf courses, parks, and expanding commercial amenities. Its role as the county seat, combined with ongoing regional development, makes Bolivia an important residential and civic community in southeastern North Carolina.
