Longwood is a rural community in southwestern Brunswick County, situated inland from the beaches and waterways that have made this portion of southeastern North Carolina a major coastal destination. These connections became increasingly significant as tourism and residential development transformed the county.

The growth of the Brunswick Islands and the Grand Strand had an important indirect effect on Longwood. Beach tourism, golf development, retirement communities, and second-home construction created employment and commercial opportunities throughout southwestern Brunswick County. Inland communities gained convenient access to expanding shopping, healthcare, restaurants, and recreational amenities while often retaining considerably more open space than the coastal towns themselves. Longwood therefore occupies a transitional landscape between the county's traditional rural interior and its rapidly developing coastal corridor.

Natural surroundings remain an important part of Longwood's identity. Forests, wetlands, agricultural land, and nearby portions of the Waccamaw River basin contribute to the area's rural character. The broader region is also associated with ecologically significant landscapes such as the Green Swamp, which preserves examples of the unique habitats historically found across the southeastern North Carolina Coastal Plain. These natural features help distinguish Longwood from more densely developed resort and suburban communities.

Today, Longwood appeals to homeowners looking for a quieter setting within easy driving distance of the Brunswick County beaches and the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. Residential properties range from established rural homes to newer construction on larger parcels. Residents can enjoy the privacy and open landscapes of inland Brunswick County while remaining close to shopping, golf, boating, fishing, beaches, and other coastal amenities.
