Lyerly traces its roots to the late 19th century when it was founded as a railroad town. Prior to settlement, the region was home to the Cherokee, who lived in the fertile valleys of northwest Georgia until their forced removal along the Trail of Tears. Chattooga County was established in 1838, and farming quickly became the dominant way of life. By the 1880s, the extension of the Chattanooga, Rome & Columbus Railroad gave rise to Lyerly, which was incorporated in 1891.
