Maple Hill is a rural community associated with Pender County and the broader southeastern North Carolina Coastal Plain. The surrounding region has a long human history that predates European colonization, when Indigenous peoples relied on the area's rivers, creeks, wetlands, forests, and wildlife for food, transportation, and trade. European-American settlement expanded gradually through southeastern North Carolina during the colonial and early national periods, with families establishing farms and small settlements across the interior. Pender County was formed in 1875 from part of New Hanover County, and communities such as Maple Hill continued to develop around agriculture, churches, schools, crossroads, and local commerce rather than around a large urban center.

Agriculture and forestry shaped the economy of the Maple Hill area for generations. The extensive pine forests of southeastern North Carolina supported timber harvesting and the naval-stores industry, which produced tar, pitch, rosin, and turpentine used in maritime commerce. As the naval-stores economy declined, lumber and other forest products continued to provide employment throughout the region. Farming was equally important, with families raising tobacco, corn, soybeans, vegetables, livestock, and other products suited to the warm climate and long growing season of the Coastal Plain. Large tracts of forest and farmland continue to influence the community's appearance.

Transportation improvements gradually connected Maple Hill with the county seat of Burgaw and with larger commercial centers in Wilmington, Jacksonville, and surrounding counties. Early residents relied on rural roads that could be difficult to travel, particularly in wet areas of the Coastal Plain. Over time, state-maintained roads and improved regional highways made it easier to transport agricultural products, reach schools and businesses, and commute to employment centers. These improvements also connected the community more closely with the growing coastal corridor stretching between Wilmington and Jacksonville.

Maple Hill's geography gives it a character that differs from Pender County's rapidly developing coastal communities. The area is defined by forests, farms, wetlands, creeks, and relatively low-density residential development rather than beachfront tourism or dense suburban neighborhoods. Natural drainage patterns and low-lying terrain are important features of the regional landscape. The surrounding forests provide wildlife habitat and reinforce the strong connection between the community and the natural environment of southeastern North Carolina.

Community life has traditionally centered on families, churches, schools, agricultural activities, and longstanding local relationships. Because Maple Hill is not a large incorporated municipality, its identity developed through rural institutions and connections among residents rather than through a dense downtown or major commercial district. This pattern remains visible today. Homeowners often have more land and greater separation between properties than residents in the increasingly suburban portions of Pender and New Hanover counties.

Today, Maple Hill offers a quiet residential setting for homeowners seeking rural living within reach of southeastern North Carolina's larger employment and commercial centers. Residents can access Burgaw, Hampstead, Holly Ridge, Jacksonville, and the greater Wilmington region while living among forests, farmland, and open space. Housing includes established rural homes, properties with acreage, manufactured housing, and newer residences. As development continues throughout coastal North Carolina, Maple Hill retains much of the lower-density landscape and agricultural heritage that have historically characterized inland Pender County.
