Marion, North Carolina, serves as the county seat of McDowell County and is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Long before European settlement, the region was inhabited by the Cherokee people, who utilized the fertile valleys and waterways for farming, hunting, and trade. The nearby Catawba River watershed and mountain passes made the area an important corridor for Indigenous travel. European-American settlers began arriving in the late eighteenth century, establishing farms and small communities as McDowell County was formed in the mid-nineteenth century. Marion was officially incorporated and named in honor of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, reflecting the patriotic spirit of its early residents.

The arrival of the railroad in nearby Old Fort during the late nineteenth century strengthened Marion's access to regional trade routes, even as Marion remained primarily a civic and commercial hub. Twentieth-century highway development, including improved state roads, further enhanced transportation and encouraged residential and industrial expansion.

Community life in Marion has long reflected its role as the heart of McDowell County. Government institutions, schools, churches, and civic organizations established a strong sense of local identity and public service. Annual events, parades, and cultural celebrations fostered community pride while preserving Appalachian traditions. Over time, Marion grew steadily while maintaining a balance between modernization and historic preservation, ensuring continuity between generations.
