The town of Mauk is one of Georgia's small, rural communities with a history rooted in the settlement of Taylor County in the mid-19th century. Originally inhabited by the Muscogee (Creek) people, the region became available to settlers after the Creek cessions of the early 1800s. Taylor County was established in 1852, and Mauk grew as a farming community within its boundaries. It was later incorporated in 1913, though its rural character remained intact.
