The community of Mayo, South Carolina, located in the northern region of Spartanburg County, traces its origins to the late 19th century—a time when small textile towns and farming settlements began emerging across the Piedmont. Before the area was formally named Mayo, it was largely inhabited by small-scale farmers who worked the fertile red clay soils of the upcountry. The region was originally home to the Cherokee Nation, who inhabited vast areas of present-day Spartanburg County prior to their forced removal following the Treaty of Dewitt's Corner in 1777. Early settlers, primarily Scots-Irish and English immigrants, were drawn to the area's rolling hills and rich farmland. They established homesteads, churches, and mills along the numerous creeks that fed into the Pacolet River. The name "Mayo" would later honor Dr. Joseph Mayo, a prominent local physician and landowner whose influence in the community helped shape its early development.

As with much of the upstate region, Mayo's economic roots lay in agriculture during its formative years. Cotton was the dominant crop, supported by smaller operations producing corn, wheat, and livestock for local consumption. The construction of the nearby Mayo Mill in the late 19th century transformed the area from a rural farming district into a thriving textile village. The Mayo Mill, established along the Pacolet River, became one of the many textile operations that fueled South Carolina's industrial rise during the post-Reconstruction era. The mill provided hundreds of jobs, and a community soon formed around it, complete with mill houses, a company store, and churches. This industrial growth mirrored the pattern seen across Spartanburg County, where towns like Pacolet, Clifton, and Glendale flourished due to textile manufacturing. The growth of railroads in the region, especially the Southern Railway line connecting Spartanburg to the broader southeastern network, allowed for greater movement of goods and people. The rise of the automobile in the early 1900s led to the paving of rural roads, connecting Mayo to neighboring communities like Chesnee, Cowpens, and Spartanburg. U.S. Highway 221 and nearby Interstate 85 later became essential routes for trade and travel. These connections allowed Mayo residents to commute to industrial centers and participate in the region's broader economic transition from textiles to diversified manufacturing. The community's close-knit mill village character persisted even as the textile industry began to wane in the latter part of the century.

Throughout its history, Mayo has maintained a strong sense of community grounded in faith, family, and hard work. Churches have always been at the heart of life in Mayo—Mayo First Baptist Church, established in the early 1900s, remains a spiritual and social anchor for the area. Local schools, youth sports, and community gatherings continue to preserve the neighborly spirit that defined Mayo's early years. During the Great Depression, residents relied heavily on one another, sharing resources and maintaining community gardens to sustain their families. The town's character is marked by a combination of Southern hospitality and resilience, traits that helped the community endure economic transitions and social changes over the decades. While the textile mills closed or reduced operations during the latter half of the 20th century, many of the original mill homes and historic structures remain, providing a tangible link to Mayo's industrious past.

Today, Mayo represents a peaceful, semi-rural enclave that captures the charm of upstate South Carolina living. It offers residents the tranquility of small-town life while providing easy access to Spartanburg's urban amenities and employment centers. Many families are drawn to the area for its affordability, safety, and proximity to scenic natural spaces like Lake Blalock and Croft State Park. The landscape surrounding Mayo remains dotted with family farms, pine forests, and open fields, reflecting the community's agricultural heritage.
