Montezuma, named after the Aztec emperor, was established in the mid-19th century along the banks of the Flint River. The area was originally inhabited by the Creek people, who valued the river's resources for agriculture and trade. European-American settlers moved into the region following the Creek removal, and Macon County was created in 1837. Montezuma developed as a farming town and benefitted greatly from its river access and later railroad connections.

Agriculture defined Montezuma's growth throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cotton was the dominant crop, supporting both small farms and larger plantations. The Flint River provided irrigation and transportation routes, making the land highly productive. In addition to cotton, Montezuma became known for peach orchards, peanuts, and livestock farming. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century was transformative. It connected Montezuma to Macon, Atlanta, and other key markets, ensuring that crops could be transported efficiently. Infrastructure improvements in the 20th century helped Montezuma adapt to economic changes, including shifts in farming practices and the mechanization of agriculture.

Churches, schools, and civic organizations provided structure and identity, while events tied to farming and the river reinforced the town's traditions. Over the years, Montezuma developed a reputation for resilience, weathering challenges from the Civil War to economic downturns while maintaining a strong sense of community pride.

The town is also home to a significant Mennonite community, whose farms and bakeries have added cultural depth to the area.
