Morganton, North Carolina, has a history that stretches back centuries, rooted deeply in the heritage of the Catawba and Cherokee peoples who inhabited the Catawba River Valley long before European settlement. The area was first explored by Spanish expeditions in the 1500s, and later by English and Scotch-Irish settlers moving westward from the Piedmont in the 18th century. Morganton was officially established in 1777 when Burke County was formed from Rowan County. Named after General Daniel Morgan, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, the town quickly became the county seat and a regional center for governance and commerce. The Western North Carolina Railroad connected the city with Asheville to the west and Salisbury to the east, providing critical links for shipping goods and attracting new industries. Textile manufacturing, furniture production, and paper processing became major economic drivers by the early 20th century. Morganton's location between the mountains and the Piedmont also made it an important transportation and trade hub. Infrastructure improvements throughout the 20th century—including U.S. Highways 64, 70, and Interstate 40—enhanced access and encouraged continued development across Burke County.

Morganton has always maintained a strong sense of community, marked by civic pride and cultural vibrancy. The downtown area developed into a center of social and commercial life, with the historic courthouse square serving as a venue for festivals, parades, and public gatherings.
