Mountville lies in southern Laurens County in the up-country region of South Carolina. The earliest settlers arrived along Beaverdam Creek in the late 18th century, drawn by the fertile soils and abundant water sources of the Piedmont. One of the earliest known residents, Solomon Fuller, established his family farm along Beaverdam Creek in 1787. During the 19th century, Mountville's economy was primarily agricultural. Cotton became the dominant crop, supported by the area's rich soil and temperate climate. Infrastructure in Mountville evolved with the construction of state highways and improved roads connecting it to surrounding towns. South Carolina Highway 72 passes to the east of the community, providing direct access to Clinton and Greenwood, while Highway 39 runs along the western side, linking Mountville to other rural areas of the county. These routes made it easier for residents to travel, trade, and access goods and services, fostering stronger ties to the broader upstate region.
