Oakwood's beginnings are closely tied to the expansion of the railroad and the development of agriculture in northeast Georgia. Before settlers of European descent moved into the Hall County area, the land was inhabited by the Cherokee, whose communities thrived in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Following the Cherokee removal in the 1830s, the fertile soil and favorable climate drew farmers and families who established homesteads and began shaping the foundations of what would become Oakwood.

The town emerged in the late 19th century as a direct result of the Gainesville, Jefferson & Southern Railroad line that cut through Hall County. Originally known as "Flat Creek," the settlement gained importance as a stop where trains refueled with wood and water. This role inspired the eventual name "Oakwood," symbolizing the oak trees that dotted the region and the vital supply of wood that sustained the locomotives. The railroad transformed Oakwood into a focal point for agricultural commerce, with farmers bringing cotton, corn, and livestock to be shipped out to markets in Atlanta and beyond.

Economic life in Oakwood grew steadily with the railroad, but the town also benefited from its proximity to Gainesville, the county seat and commercial hub of Hall County. As agriculture remained central through the 19th and early 20th centuries, Oakwood became known for both small-scale family farms and local businesses that supported rural life. The shift from cotton to poultry farming, which Hall County is famous for, also left a lasting imprint on Oakwood, as poultry houses and related industries became common throughout the area.

Infrastructure development in the 20th century reshaped Oakwood's trajectory. The construction of major roadways such as Interstate 985 and U.S. Route 23 created new opportunities for commerce and residential development. With easy access to Atlanta and the rapidly expanding northeast Georgia corridor, Oakwood transitioned from a rural train stop into a community that attracted both businesses and commuters. The nearby creation of Lake Lanier in the 1950s also spurred growth, offering recreational opportunities that increased the area's appeal for residents and visitors alike.
