Paw Creek is located in the northwestern portion of Mecklenburg County, lying on the outer edge of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The region lies within what was once the frontier of colonial settlement in North Carolina. Before European arrival, this area was traversed by Native peoples who used the rivers, creeks, and forest corridors for travel, hunting, and trade. As European settlers pressed westward in the mid-18th century, Mecklenburg County was established (in 1762), and settlement gradually pushed outward from Charlotte into the surrounding creeks and upland terrain.

The name "Paw Creek" itself is tied to the natural environment: the creek running through the area was reportedly named for the pawpaw trees that once grew along its banks, and over time the local community adopted the creek's name. A local Presbyterian congregation organized in the early 1800s, and the Paw Creek Presbyterian Church and accompanying cemetery became focal points for community life. Over time, as farmers, merchants, and families settled, a modest rural community grew along the creek's valley.

Transportation and infrastructure developments over time greatly influenced Paw Creek's growth. Roads were cut to connect the area to Charlotte and other nearby towns. As Charlotte expanded, the edges of Paw Creek began to see incremental suburban influence and annexation. The construction of major roadways, including portions of I-485 and other arterials, increased connectivity to the rest of Mecklenburg County. As infrastructure such as electricity, municipal water, sewer, and cable networks spread outward from Charlotte, the Paw Creek area gradually transitioned from rural to more suburban in character.

Community life in Paw Creek today is an interplay of its rural roots and suburban reality. The area includes residential subdivisions, small business corridors, and natural open spaces. Residents often enjoy wooded lots, creek corridors, and quieter neighborhoods, even as they have access to urban amenities just minutes away in Charlotte. Local schools, churches, and civic groups help define the social fabric. The community identity still leans on its creek, forest, and historical references, even as new development occurs.

Today Paw Creek is widely considered part of the greater Charlotte region, with many properties annexed into the city over time. Some portions remain unincorporated, retaining a blend of suburban and semi-rural character. The name Paw Creek remains in local use—on roads, schools, neighborhoods, and institutions—and the community is appreciated by those who want a balance: access to Charlotte's services and culture, yet proximity to green space, creek corridors, and a less dense lifestyle.
