Pendleton, South Carolina, is one of the oldest and most historic towns in the Upstate, steeped in charm, heritage, and Southern grace. Following the Civil War, Pendleton underwent significant changes as the plantation economy collapsed. The founding of Clemson Agricultural College (now Clemson University) in 1889 just a few miles away had a profound influence on Pendleton, bringing new educational, cultural, and economic opportunities to the region.

Throughout the 20th century, Pendleton managed to preserve its historic charm while embracing modernization. Improvements in transportation, including U.S. Highway 76 and Interstate 85, made the town more accessible to the growing cities of Anderson and Greenville. The preservation of the Pendleton Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, helped ensure that the town's architectural and cultural legacy would endure. Community organizations and historical societies have played a key role in maintaining the town's identity, hosting events such as the annual Spring Jubilee and local farmers' markets that celebrate regional craftsmanship and tradition.
