Pendleton History
Pendleton, South Carolina, is one of the oldest and most historic towns in the Upstate, steeped in charm, heritage, and Southern grace. The area that became Pendleton was originally inhabited by Cherokee tribes, who thrived on the fertile lands along the Seneca River and nearby foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Following the American Revolution, settlers began to move into the region as treaties opened Cherokee territory to European settlement. In 1790, Pendleton was officially established as the seat of the newly formed Pendleton District, which at the time encompassed much of what are now Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties. Named in honor of Judge Henry Pendleton, a prominent South Carolina patriot, the town quickly became a center for political and social activity in the Upstate.
During the early 19th century, Pendleton flourished as a prosperous agricultural community. Wealthy planters from the South Carolina Lowcountry built summer homes in the area, drawn by its cooler climate and scenic landscape. Cotton production, aided by enslaved labor, became the economic foundation of the region. The elegant homes constructed during this period—such as Ashtabula, Woodburn, and Hunter's Store—still stand today as landmarks of antebellum architecture and reminders of Pendleton's early prominence. The town's location made it a gathering point for commerce, education, and governance, serving as a hub for farmers and traders throughout the surrounding countryside.
Following the Civil War, Pendleton underwent significant changes as the plantation economy collapsed. The abolition of slavery and the devastation of the Southern economy forced the community to adapt. Agriculture remained vital, but small industry and trade began to emerge as residents sought to rebuild their livelihoods. The arrival of nearby railroads in the late 19th century, particularly in Anderson and Seneca, allowed for increased trade and mobility, even though Pendleton itself retained much of its quiet, small-town atmosphere. The founding of Clemson Agricultural College (now Clemson University) in 1889 just a few miles away had a profound influence on Pendleton, bringing new educational, cultural, and economic opportunities to the region.
Throughout the 20th century, Pendleton managed to preserve its historic charm while embracing modernization. Improvements in transportation, including U.S. Highway 76 and Interstate 85, made the town more accessible to the growing cities of Anderson and Greenville. The preservation of the Pendleton Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, helped ensure that the town's architectural and cultural legacy would endure. Community organizations and historical societies have played a key role in maintaining the town's identity, hosting events such as the annual Spring Jubilee and local farmers' markets that celebrate regional craftsmanship and tradition.
Today, Pendleton represents a perfect blend of historic heritage and modern livability. Its walkable downtown square, lined with antique shops, cafés, and restored buildings, evokes a timeless Southern atmosphere. Residents and visitors alike enjoy its proximity to Clemson University, Lake Hartwell, and the scenic foothills of the Appalachians. Pendleton continues to attract families, retirees, and professionals seeking a peaceful community with a strong sense of place. With its historic character, educational connections, and welcoming spirit, Pendleton stands as one of South Carolina's most beloved small towns—where the echoes of the past enrich a vibrant and enduring present.
