The history of Perry, Georgia, stretches back to the early 19th century when Houston County was created in 1821. The town was established soon after as a trading center and county seat, strategically located near the geographic center of the state. Its name honored Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, a naval hero from the War of 1812.
