Pineville, North Carolina, is one of Mecklenburg County's most historically significant small towns, located just south of Charlotte near the South Carolina state line. Long before European settlement, this region was part of the ancestral lands of the Catawba Nation, whose presence along the Catawba River shaped the landscape and trade routes that would later influence European migration. In the 18th century, settlers from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas began moving into the area, establishing farms and trade paths that connected to Charlotte Town (founded in 1768). Pineville's fertile soil and gently rolling topography made it ideal for farming, and early residents cultivated cotton, corn, and other staple crops.

The establishment of a railroad line through the area in the mid-19th century marked the true beginning of Pineville's development. The town was originally known as "Morrow's Turnout," named after a local landowner, but when a pine grove near the rail station became a landmark, it was renamed "Pineville." The Charlotte & Columbia Railroad made Pineville a key shipping and trade point for local farmers, and by the late 1800s, it had evolved into a small but thriving community. In 1850, Pineville gained further historical importance as the birthplace of the 11th U.S. President, James K. Polk, whose homestead remains a preserved state historic site today.

Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pineville's economy reflected the agricultural and industrial trends of the southern Piedmont. Cotton ginning and textile manufacturing became central to local industry, and the Pineville Cotton Mill, established in 1894, served as a hub of employment and community life. The town grew modestly, supported by a mix of merchants, tradespeople, and farming families. Despite the Great Depression's hardships, Pineville maintained a sense of stability and community cohesion.

As transportation improved, especially with the construction of U.S. Highway 521 and later Interstate 485, Pineville became more closely tied to Charlotte's metropolitan expansion. Suburbanization began accelerating in the mid-20th century, bringing residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and public services to the area. Yet, even as Pineville modernized, it retained its distinct small-town identity, anchored by its historic downtown and preserved architectural heritage. The railroad depot and traditional main street storefronts remain enduring symbols of its past.

Modern Pineville is a dynamic blend of old and new. The historic downtown area offers boutique shops, restaurants, and community events that celebrate local culture. The town is also home to Carolina Place Mall and a range of commercial developments that connect it economically to Charlotte and Fort Mill. Pineville's neighborhoods attract residents who appreciate proximity to urban centers while enjoying the quieter, tree-lined streets and sense of community. The James K. Polk State Historic Site, Pineville Lake Park, and seasonal festivals highlight the town's balance between historical preservation and modern living.

Today, Pineville stands as both a commuter-friendly suburb and a historically rich community that values its heritage. Its growth continues to be guided by thoughtful planning, ensuring that the charm and warmth of its small-town roots endure even as it thrives within the orbit of one of the Southeast's fastest-growing metropolitan regions.
