Polkville, North Carolina, is a quiet rural community located in the northern part of Cleveland County. The region was originally inhabited by the Catawba people, whose presence extended throughout the foothills and Piedmont of western North Carolina. By the mid-18th century, European settlers—largely of Scots-Irish and German descent—migrated into the area, drawn by fertile land, forest resources, and access to water. Cleveland County, established in 1841 from parts of Rutherford and Lincoln counties, became the administrative home for the settlements that would later form Polkville and its surrounding communities.

The town was named in honor of Leonidas Lafayette Polk, a prominent agricultural reformer, journalist, and North Carolina's first Commissioner of Agriculture, who also founded the Progressive Farmer newspaper. While Polk himself did not found the town, his advocacy for farming communities resonated strongly in this region, which relied heavily on agriculture and family-based production. During the 19th century, Polkville developed as a crossroads village serving local farmers. Cotton, corn, and livestock dominated the area's economy, and small gristmills, sawmills, and general stores dotted the landscape.

The arrival of better road systems connecting Shelby and Morganton helped local commerce and allowed farmers to bring their goods to larger markets. Although the railroad bypassed the town, Polkville's residents benefited from the economic vitality of nearby Shelby, which served as the county seat. The town officially incorporated in 1911, establishing a small municipal framework. Throughout much of the 20th century, Polkville retained its agricultural roots while gradually modernizing. The introduction of electricity, telephone lines, and paved roads brought convenience and connectivity to rural households. Families began diversifying into other trades—timber, textiles, and small business ownership—while still maintaining ties to the land. Local churches, such as Polkville Baptist Church and Elizabeth Baptist Church, became enduring landmarks of faith and fellowship that remain important community pillars today.
