Randleman History
The area that became Randleman, North Carolina, lies within land once inhabited by the Keyauwee and other Indigenous groups who lived throughout the Piedmont prior to European settlement. Randolph County was formally established in 1779, and the Deep River region soon became a draw for early settlers seeking fertile farmland and access to water resources. The beginnings of Randleman can be traced to gristmills and early industries that used the river's power, eventually forming the small settlement known first as Dicks Mills and later Union Factory. These early industrial foundations set the stage for Randleman's eventual emergence as a thriving mill town.
During the 19th century, the textile industry transformed the Deep River communities, with mills becoming central to economic life. Randleman developed rapidly around these operations, which included cotton factories and manufacturing facilities that produced goods for the broader region. As mills expanded, so did employment opportunities, leading to housing construction, commercial businesses, and a growing population. By the late 1800s, the town was renamed Randleman in honor of John Banner Randleman, a mill owner whose influence helped shape the town's industrial identity. For many decades, textiles remained the backbone of local commerce, anchoring the town's workforce and shaping generations of family livelihoods.
Infrastructure improvements further propelled Randleman's development. The arrival of rail lines enabled efficient transport of textile products and raw materials, linking Randleman to major North Carolina markets. In the 20th century, the expansion of U.S. Highway 220 and later the construction of the modern Interstate 73/74 corridor enhanced the town's connectivity to Greensboro, Asheboro, and beyond. These transportation routes provided new economic opportunities and helped diversify the types of businesses that could operate in and around the city. The creation of Randleman Lake in the early 2000s added a significant recreational and environmental asset, further contributing to the region's growth.
As Randleman evolved, it cultivated a strong sense of community rooted in local traditions, civic organizations, churches, and schools. While its population remained modest compared to nearby urban centers, the town built a reputation for its hospitality and shared pride in local history. One of the most notable cultural connections is to NASCAR legend Richard Petty, whose family roots in the Randleman area helped shape the city's identity. The Petty Museum remains a popular attraction, drawing motorsports enthusiasts from around the country and reinforcing Randleman's place in North Carolina's racing heritage.
Today, Randleman offers an appealing blend of small-town charm, convenient regional access, and community-centered living. With its proximity to the Greensboro and High Point metropolitan area, residents enjoy a peaceful environment with easy access to employment, shopping, and entertainment. Randleman Lake provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and nature exploration, while local parks and businesses contribute to a family-friendly atmosphere. Modern Randleman continues to preserve its industrial heritage while embracing new growth, making it an attractive location for homeowners, retirees, and those seeking a tight-knit community within the broader Piedmont Triad region.
